Both the teams are without the services of few of their best batsmen who excelled against each other in the previous series. Australia will be without their best batsman for more than a decade in form of Ricky Ponting and their most consistent cricket in form of Micheal Hussey. On the other hand India will be without the services of Mr. Dependable Rahul Dravid and the very very special Laxman who was at his best against Australia which is his best opponents over the years.
With couple of new faces in both the teams and few others who are looking to cement their place in the line up from both the countries, this series will be a contest for the future stars. With just one senior batsman in the middle order of both the line ups, Sachin Tendulkar from India and the Australian captain Micheal Clarke will be looking to score big in the series.
David Warner and Ed Cowan who have few good individual performances in the previous series against South Africa will look to perform as a pair and give good opening partnership on which the team can rest on. But this is not going to be easy for Ed Cowan as this is his first tour to India and the conditions here will be challenging for him.
India on the other hand hasn’t picked the senior batsmen Gautham Gambhir who haven’t scored a test century since Feb 2010 and have given a maiden chance to Shikhar Dhawan in the lineup. Shikhar Dhawan has been performing well in the first class arena and the chance should be given for him long before. Uthappa and he were the best opening pair in the under-19 circuit and Dhawan especially is the leading run scorer and the man of the series for that year’s under-19 world cup. But he couldn’t carry on at the top level and consistency has been his main difficulty. He is more matured now and is more confident than ever that he would be scoring big and uses this opportunity.
However, the more experienced batsmen, who has already proved himself at the top, Murali Vijay is likely to get the chance ahead of Dhawan. I am very impressed with the style and elegance that Vijay plays with. He can just stand tall and deliver. He is one of the most promising youngsters around and he has already proved that. He can play all the shots in the book and will be an ideal replacement for Gambhir at the top. He is very accurate in the field too. He is one such fielder who takes very difficult catches and makes them look so simple and the confidence he shows in the field will be seen in very few players. He should utilize this opportunity and prove the selectors that he is a test material.
