Team Squads

Ireland (possible): 1 William Porterfield (capt), 2 Paul Stirling, 3 Ed Joyce, 4 Niall O’Brien (wkt), 5 Gary Wilson, 6 Kevin O’Brien, 7 Andrew White, 8 Alex Cusack, 9 Trent Johnston, 10 Tim Murtagh, 11 George Dockrell

Pakistan (possible): 1 Imran Farhat, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Asad Shafiq, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Umar Amin, 7 Kamran Akmal (wkt), 8 Saeed Ajmal, 9 Junaid Khan, 10 Mohammad Irfan, 11 Ehsan Adil/Wahab Riaz

Out of 4 hundreds in his short career one was against Pakistan in 2nd ODI of the series played between these two sides in 2011. It was Junaid Khan who got him out in both the games and same battle will be continued in the two ODIs ahead. Junaid has also developed as a front-line bowler for Pakistan and is also in great knick since the series against India in December last year.

Though, the Ireland captain, Porterfield didn’t enjoy much luck against Pakistan but he looked in great touch in the last ODI Ireland played against UAE at Sharjah earlier this year. Besides, Joyce, O’Brien brothers and Wilson can be of crucial importance in the first ODI against Pakistan. The side will be short of their regular all-rounder John Mooney in the 1st ODI because he’s facing a suspension due to some intensive tweet of late.

With the ball, the former captain, Trent Johnston would play a significant role as he has been good on many occasions, especially against Pakistan. With 63 wickets and more than 650 runs, Johnston has been a crucial pillar in the Ireland squad over the years. Alex Cusack has also been a handy bowling option for Ireland. In the 2 games against UAE he was the highest wicket taker for Ireland sharing the spot with Johnston as they both got 5 wickets in 2 games. With such players in their ranks, Ireland stands a good chance to take the game away from Pakistan on 23rd.

Pakistan, on the other hand, are enjoying good form since the tour of India last December. Though, they were up and down against South Africa but they can very well tackle the weaker sides quite easily and can get good practice for the Champions Trophy. But with comparatively inexperienced squad than what they usually have, it can be a tough ask for the side if their main players fail to deliver. The side majorly depends on top 3 in the form of Imran Farhat, Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez. While, in the middle order their main stay is the captain Misbah ul Haq who played a brilliant knock against Scotland in the first ODI.

Youngsters Asad Shafiq and Umar Amin have been given yet another chance and they couldn’t deliver against Scotland. If they have to cement their spot in the side then they’ll have to come good in the first ODI against Ireland.

The bowling attack has been performing splendidly as always. Ajmal took 3 for 25 and Junaid was even better with 3 for 19 in the last game. With such bowling efforts, Pakistan are the favorites for sure.
