Scotland had to face defeats in their last two ODIs that were played at Sharjah against Afghanistan. As teams like Scotland get a chance to play against the giants of the game less often, it’s going to be a huge challenge for them to show some extraordinary performance. There squad has not been announced yet and it is expected that more or less they will go with the same team that played against Afghanistan in March. The bunch of players they have been pursuing comprises mostly of the younger crop which is enthusiastic and committed to give their best every time they step in to the ground.

There are some promising names in their squad like Kyle Coetzer, Matt Machan, Richie Berrington, Moneeb Iqbal, Gordon Drummond, Majid Haq, Safyaan Sharif and Iain Wardlaw that can come good for their side on any day leading them to a strong position either with the bat or with the ball. In the last two games against Afghanistan Coetzer came up with 156 runs and was the highest scorer for the side in the aggregate for the two games. Fifties from Davey and Berrington along with handy 44 from Machan worked good especially when their side needed these scores. Though, against the specialist bowling attack of Pakistan that includes pacers like 7-footer Mohammad Irfan, Junaid Khan and pacey Wahab Riaz it will be a huge challenge for the Scottish players but who knows if it is a bad day for the Pakistani pacers.

Tall Mohammad Irfan took 11 wickets in just 4 games against a professional side like South Africa and this speaks it all about the talent this big guy has got. He was also sensational with the ball in the series against India as well. Junaid was also impressive with 7 wickets in the five games as well. Furthermore, with the experience of the spinners like Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal Scotland batsmen would have a tough task to handle. The master of “Doosra” is hard to pick especially for those who are facing him for the first time and this would be the case for the Scotland batsmen as well. Ajmal can prove to be the real difference between the sides.

As far as the batting is concerned, Pakistan is going into the series after dropping 3 of their major batsmen in the likes of Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi and Umar Akmal. So, there will be more pressure on the middle order where experienced Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal would serve as the dependent players for the side. Misbah, who is always under huge criticism for his batting style, was quite impressive against South Africa where he took his team out of many unwanted situations from where they could have easily lost the match but he didn’t let that happen and put great fights.

It’s going to be a good contest between bat and ball as Pakistan will take on Scotland on 17th of May.
